I became interested in experimenting with the spaces inhabited by the characters, beyond the dirt backyard. This concept complimented Christian’s biggest thematic focus on the text; clairvoyancy and the characters relationships with spirituality.
My dramaturgical exploration centered around the character, Hedley. Seeing this world through his eyes, I wanted his perceptions and feelings towards the other characters to be articulated through their costume colour palettes, and the connection these colours have to Haitian Voodoo. In the set, presenting a gauze frame, stretched across the space would serve as a barrier, between the living and the dead but also the world that goes on beyond the dirt backyard in the Hill District.
